THE CHALLENGE

Food in South Africa remains costly due to waste and inefficiency, with nearly a third of production lost and almost half of available food failing to reach households. The industrial food system offers calorie-dense, shelf-stable foods but leads to limited nutrition vulnerable to climate change and disease, contributing to chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease.

Furthermore, climate change, soil erosion, urban expansion, and industrial projects are reducing arable land and affecting livelihoods. Major reforms are needed, yet government action remains insufficient.

For cities to grow, resilient food systems are essential. Future Farm Africa, through its three regenerative farming programs, supports communities to integrate sustainable food production into urban development, enhancing environmental sustainability & stronger social cohesion, helping urban populations grow healthier & more self-reliant.

Food Security - CitiFarmz™

Food Security - CitiFarmz™

Food Security - CitiFarmz™

CitiFarmz™ is an innovative urban regenerative agriculture program that brings food production directly into cities, turning under utilized urban spaces into thriving centres of food, education, & economic opportunity. The program addresses critical challenges facing marginalised urban communities; food insecurity, unemployment, climate change, nutrition gaps & social cohesion by localizing food systems & empowering residents.

Community - AgriHoodz™

Food Security - CitiFarmz™

Food Security - CitiFarmz™

AgriHoodz™ is an urban agriculture initiative focused on transforming neighbourhoods by converting 'hood spaces into thriving community hubs that support both social renewal and stable, sustainable incomes for residents. By equipping local communities with resources and skills, the program fosters economic resilience and empowers individuals to secure reliable livelihoods, all while revitalizing social connections and fostering a sense of neighbourhood pride.

Education - SkoolFarmz™

Food Security - CitiFarmz™

Education - SkoolFarmz™

SkoolFarmz™ is a school-based urban farming program designed to integrate sustainable agriculture into educational environments. The project transforms available school spaces—such as courtyards, rooftops, gardens, or unused land—into productive learning farms that support education, nutrition & community development.

Approach & Impact

Think smart, future ready, low tech, eco-friendly farms with low-impact systems. Think raised beds, vertical gardens, composting household waste, and water-saving techniques—supercharging food yields, slashing waste. Every project is built to scale, easy to replicate, and shaped for its neighbourhood. Best part? Locals get hands-on training in sustainable growing and food production, creating co-op ownership, green jobs, and steady income—all powered by the community!

Impact: Reduced energy use & emissions, shortened food supply chains & lower transportation costs & emissions & storage demands. Local livelihoods, neighbourhood employment, small-scale urban food enterprises, community. Increased access to fresh, affordable produce, improved nutrition, wellbeing & public health outcomes, particularly in underserved areas. Need we go on?

WHY REGENERATIVE URBAN AGRICULTURE?

1. Nutrition & Food Security

Urban farms provide fresh healthy and affordable produce in areas that would otherwise be food deserts. This ensures better nutrition for vulnerable urban populations, and helps to build resilience against disruptions in global food supply chains.

2. Economic Opportunity & Income Creation

Addressing unemployment head on, urban farms provide jobs, skills & incomes for farmers & employees. By focusing on youth & women, CitiFarmz enables entrepreneurship & provides sustainable incomes.

3. Community Building & Social Cohesion

Urban farms foster social interaction & community engagement. They empower residents by allowing them to  actively participate in their own food production & promote skills, food literacy & security,

4. Environmental Sustainability & Climate Resilience

Urban farms can mitigate climate change impacts by shortening food supply chains (reducing carbon emissions), repurposing organic waste into compost, & using water-efficient technologies. They integrate with the circular economy & can make cities more resilient to climate-related disruptions.

5. Health & Well Being

Access to green spaces & outdoors can improve mental & physical health. By providing a direct connection to where food comes form, these farms can encourage healthier eating habits & a greater appreciation for the food system.
